CORAL HULL: THE SECRET HORSES OF PETERBOROUGH
18. OUTBACK HOSPITALITY

b. The Wilcannia Disco And Rising River, New South Wales

the rip off hotel in wilcannia, is always the last one open,
through the paisley orange curtains the town blows in and settles,
loud seventies disco music blaring down the main road,
gangs on the streets, bars on the windows, bourke is shut down,
scarce petrol, more dust and a muddy river on the rise,
it takes six weeks for the water to get down from queensland and flood,
the caravan park is empty lit up by floodlights, one lonely young guard dog,
the river will pour through it in two days time,
the smashed glass boats are waiting for the wide brown current,
there's always a sense of going into rain or outracing the rain,
it is winter, the wilcannia disco, bored street gangs and rising river
