CORAL HULL: REED-SONG: EARLY POEMS: VOL 4
page-294 you left/ you said: there was no
room left for you/ i thought you
were tired/ so i let you go/ but
i want you to know/ that my mind
became unhinged/ for a moment
unhealthy/ & suddenly the crowd
meant nothing to me/ & i felt
your presence like a spectre/
& saw you squeezed out in the
distance/ but could not touch the
ghost/ & tried to concentrate
on the conversations of poets
that night/ & new faces emerging
from the woodwork/ of the clifton
hill hotel/ mainly to say that
they liked my work/ & for me to
pat them on the back in mutual
admiration/ but i only closed
down shop & said: yeah i feel
a bit down after that reading/
when i felt the bottom drop out
of my world/ when i wanted to
shout down smith st/ tonight a
monumental thing has happened/
he got up from his seat & left
