                                                                                                              page-194 our mate is gone

as i sit silently by myself
breathing in the frosty twilight
air, i wonder if life is really
worth living. my dog toby
gently nudges my arm, with
his wet nose, to reassure me
of his presence. my eyes leave
tobys inquiring face and wonder
over to the grave of my once
faithful friend rusky. a feeling of
something missing and complete
loneliness envelopes me. and as
the first twinkling stars dot
the horizon, toby lifts his topaz
eyes to the sky and sings a song
of despair for our lost friend.
