                                                                                                                page-89 FACTORY WORKER

This poem is for a mother who works a year for two weeks in the sun.

Continuous motion
Boom Boom..Boom Boom..Boom Boom
Twenty four hours, no relief
Boom Boom..Boom Boom
Monotony
Boom Boom..Boom Boom..Boom Boom
The machines not tired
Boom Boom..Boom Boom
Like you
Boom Boom..Boom Boom..Boom Boom
Ten thousand cups in ten minutes
Pick them all up
Grovel on the floor on your hands and knees
Your knees are black
Like the bags under your eyes
You cannot hear the clock tick on
Machines are loud
Industrial deafness
You run the treadwheel
Like a guinea pig in a circus
Food, clothing and shelter
Money doesn't even pay the rent
Until next payday
You run the treadwheel faster
BUT YOU GET NOWHERE...
And you wish payday was here
Its already spent
The kids are hungry and your behind in rent
You wish the week away
Boom Boom..Boom Boom..Boom Boom
Coffee break. Ten minute forty six seconds
Eager eyes on the second hand
Every second counts
Then eyes to floor, back to the drudgery
Boom Boom..Boom Boom
Cuts and bruises, very dangerous
But the machine has no feelings
Boom Boom..Boom Boom..Boom Boom
Like you
Boom Boom..Boom Boom.
Blank expressions
Overtime stampede
Trampled
Maybe this week we'll get in front
Compensation dreams
Your back bone aches
But no-one dares to question
..They are here for the wages
And darkly their faces wish away the week
Another day....Another dollar
Friday bliss...
Forty eight hours no relief
To spend with their families
Monday begins
Boom Boom..Boom Boom.
They run the treadwheel
Boom Boom..Boom Boom..Boom Boom
They wish away the week
Boom Boom..Boom Boom
They wish away their lives
Boom.
