CORAL HULL: REED-SONG: EARLY POEMS: VOL 2
page-120 he told me not to fall in love
with him/ repeating himself on
Conditions & commitment/ so i
held a mirror up to him & said:
fall in love with yourself/ i
also thought how perfectly he
had unlocked the car door for
me/ & noticed that the apple
juice he had paid for was
$1.80/ it was the nicest two
things anyone had done for me
since yesterday/ then he was
worried that i wouldn't be able
to give him up/ that i would
fall for him/ like all the
other women had/ now i feel i
have to disappoint him/ but it
was only a conversation/ & i
fell in love with his words/
which were the words of passion/
then i married my own precious
living/ on the pulpit of his
sermon/ & was pleased to be in
the company of him/ then i was
pleased to be alone/ & when he
was gone/ i ran through the
long grass with my dogs/ & saw
the wind & kissed my own
reflection/
