CORAL HULL: POINT-BLANK-POOR
57. Poverty Consciousness Fueled By Soft Drinks

We made endless fimo brooches on the dole & bought these coloured
beads & threaded them for hours, in front of a rented tv & video.
We used our pensions to make elaborate earrings & sat
hopefully at the markets, at our stall, our stomachs grumbling all day.
We never made a cent, it cost us $80, why did we do it?
We could have used that $80 to buy a second hand fridge,
We never had one all that summer, because we had poverty consciousness.
We struggled with our worth in the forty degree heat.
We spent enough money buying icy drinks down at the local milkbar,
than it would have taken to buy 2 fridges, but we just lived in the present
& being too beaten down, we didn't really think about it.
There was a lot of fucken jewellery around, to remind us of our dreams.
But all our days were hot & dry and all our drinks were warm.
You may find this hard to understand, if you do, I don't blame you.
