Nikita speaks: Yeah, well the one I slept with was crazy. I saw him at the bar jerking around, pulling all these weird facial expressions, and I said to my girlfriend, 'That one there is mad.' He was okay looking, but too crazy. Well, of course I ended up with him, didn't I? You'd think I liked hurting myself sometimes. Anyway, despite everything it was a great night at the Plaza Hotel. Before we got down to business he had another woman's legs wrapped around his head at the Blue Heelers Bar. 'What was he?' A diver. 'It figures.' They all laugh. 'Is that the one who fucks like a jack hammer?' Absolutely. He grabbed onto my pussy like he was holding a cord on a tram. He wouldn't let go until I almost clubbed him. He didn't give jack-shit about my body. I should have ripped his earring out of his nipple or at least been more assertive. But they prefer it when you act all girly, so I looked at it like a child would and he noticed. 'You mean you did all that without being paid?

Oh Nikita! Were you hard up or something?' Jackie scoffed. No, I like people, okay? 'And they think very highly of you too,' Sharlena added with a wink. I like masculinity, broad shoulders, big chests and plenty of testosterone. Apart from the deceit afterwards, I liked being there. I even gave him a little backrub. 'You didn't. Oh you didn't, Nikita!' Yeah I did. And what's wrong with that? 'Well, it's not part of the deal. You spoilt him. Next they'll all be wanting it. Did he give you one?' No, but he touched my eyebrow once. They all groan. 'So you were treated like shit.' 'Well, she was okay, ladies. He snuggled up to her all night. That was Nikita's reward for the sex.' No, Jackie, it wasn't like that! It was what it was. I didn't want anything else. 'But if and when he had offered, would you had taken it?' I dunno. 'When he said he'd ring, did you believe him?' Yes. 'Oh Nikita! You're hopeless. Of course he's not going to ring.'

I believed him because we'd been so intimate. There had to be some kind of trust. God, I mean we had our bodies inside one another, not to mention all the things that were said. Doesn't that kind of intimacy count for something? I don't get it. It's very confusing. 'So did he kiss much, like, did he go deep?' Yeah. A little bit. But he was too rough so I gave it a miss. 'Nevertheless, said Jackie, 'if he's done some tongue diving, you better get a throat swab.' Imagine a world where everything was a perpetual lie and you never knew where you stood, or whether to wait or not, to expose or conceal or to give or take. It makes me feel lost. Well, it doesn't if you don't care. But I want to care. All this shit makes the world hard and careless.

I guess it adds up to that. 'Did you come?' Not really. He wanted me to come twice, but I think by then that the whole situation had overwhelmed me and I was getting tired. Not just of him. I was getting tired of everything. No, I liked him. But I've never seen so many plastic bags of speed and other junk. He was a real pill junkie, Sharlena. He was intense and had all these tattoos on his body. There was a huge one of a shark or a dolphin up one side. I realise now that I didn't like it as much as I thought I had. It was badly drawn and looked incomplete somehow. I couldn't tell him what I really thought. Then there were dolphins and hammerhead sharks on his butt and calves. He was crazy wearing all these Hard Rock Café T-shirts and plastic jewellery. They seem to take all their sentimental trinkets into each port with them. It must be lonely out at sea. You can tell they're isolated 'cause they act like children with their gadgets. It was an okay night. For a start he had to buy me a double rum for being with him, or I was leaving. So he did that, but he probably hated me for it. As it turned out, Samantha had 'Eddie Murphy'. She kept biting his arm, her green eyes looking up like a cat. Later in the night, she started ringing friends up on her mobile phone, telling them how big his 'donger' was. His name was Elvis but he looked more like Eddie Murphy. 'Poor man,' said Roxanne. 'No way, honey,' said Sharlena, 'He wasn't a "poor man". He was an arsehole, cheating on his wife and kids again. They're based in Italy.'

Samantha speaks: Eddie Murphy was okay as an entree. I also danced with this huge man at Sweethearts, deep brown and muscular. Yep, Negro. He frightened the Hell outa me! Oh yeah he really did, sweetie! The way he danced was something else. He held his gigantic arms as if trying to catch me in their big net. I felt like a butterfly. But after all the small talk I noticed that his fists were set too tight for dancing. Also he was quiet and didn't smile much. He had been watching me all night. In the end he really freaked me out and I knew that by midnight he weren't gettin' no yin. Later on, when the girls and I left the casino, he called my name, 'Samantha!' I was frightened to turn around. But he just said, 'Thanks for the dance.' Jesus, I only danced with him because I was frightened to say no! It weren't titillating fear, it was sensible fear. And that ain't the last of it. He offered me a quick two hundred, so I ended up doing him at the last minute. And let me tell you, his deep purple velvet jeans didn't leave much to the imagination, even in the dark. His dick was four hands high, and I mean you had to grab hold of it with four good hands! Oh my God, I thought. That's just too big, sweetie! That thing was so big that it needed its own postcode!!
