15. the cold & moderate rain, that stops routine

the cold & moderate rain, that stops routine, has allowed us to stay indoors & be ourselves today, it has allowed us to stay in our baggy clothes, our pyjamas, & play like children on the carpet, to feel cosy & comfy, we can lie between the scrunched-up blankets & eat toast, or watch the midday programs on the tele, we have slept in past peak hour & drink hot cups of caro & tea until we are caffeineated, we do not need to step outside to go to the corner shop, everything we need is in the house, warmed by the central heating, we watch the cold & moderate rain saturate the big wide world, as we colour in with messy crayons like kids behind plate glass windows, where outside in the grey freeze the trees have never looked so tossed & big, & the noise of the wind tucking in around the house has never felt so determined, in its effort to move into every orifice in order to freeze it, & to make a cold path for itself where it travels with the rain on its back, we shiver wrapped in bright scarves & blankets & wearing stripey socks, we think now of the cold interiors of cars & of the blast of air when the front door is opened to collect the mail, some person has been riding around out there in a fluoro raincoat on a pushbike to deliver it, even on a day like this, on the news we see the workforce in their cars breaking down on flooded freeways & the rooves that have left the houses, we ring up a girlfriend & snuggle deep into our slippers on the way to a hot bath, we don't have to go out like hard-faced-bitches confronted with concrete & traffic, we can be inside & be ourselves today
