Landscape That I Built Around Myself

I was a magnificent shelter around myself. Layer upon layer of selves. On some days I was restless, to belong to something, that I knew nothing about. I was clawing my way through to the surface. I was kicking down the walls from the inside. Once I got to the outside, I found myself alone, in an alien and hostile world, relentless and unforgiving. Things are eating each other alive. Humans are chattering and unpredictable like chimpanzees and their high pitched shrieking hurt my ears. The jungle was overwhelming. I crawled back inside where it was silent snow. I built my little igloo from blue crystals. I heard the wind howling around me. In that sky there was one bird, not too many. Bird like an ethereal backdrop. No lice. No death. No beaks. No hurt. This was my no-country. This was the landscape that I built around myself. While I had been inside stacking the ice into silence and walls, another consciousness, more powerful than me, had created Antarctica.
