                                                                                                              page-249 SUNSET II

The sunset paints a picture
Of brilliance in the sky
A vivid clay coloured portrait
Of a fire in the night

The gum trees bow their heads
The wattles arms stretch high
Silowetted shadows
Of that picture in the sky

The colours of twilight lengthen
Across the plains horizon
The colours of sunset strengthen
Orange, yellow, red and crimson The tranquil picture is broken
By flashes of red and black
A flock of black cockies settle
On a gum tree's ghostly white back

The sunset colours darken
Brightening the stars white light
The bush whispers goodbye to the sunset
And gives way to a cool clear night.
