My dog was once a faithful friend
But his beauty did not last
His tragic death I could not mend
It was over so very fast
My dog was on his daily run
He loved to run wild and free
He loved the open air and sun
Most of all he loved me
I saw a flash of sudden light
My companion had no chance
The reckless driver drove out of sight
And never spared a glance
I ran and saw him lying there
I knelt and stroked his head
His eyes dimmed with grief and despair
I knew my dog was dead
There was no time to praise him again
How his sleek coat shone
He was indeed my very best friend
And now my friend is gone.
