                                                                                                              page-170 MORNING TRAIN

WARNING.
Tuesday morning train.
So many eyes.
Uniforms, wristwatches, timetables.
Weekly tickets, opened newspapers.
Staring blantantly ... yet they stand,
and sleepband shuffle with the trains
rocking myriads of motion.
DO NOT LEAN OUT OF WINDOWS OR DOORS.
Passing debris, colourless.
Reeking of suburbia.
Parked cars, heavy streetlights,
Sticky morning drizzle.
Damp, dazed, sparrows.
KEEP WHOLLY WITHIN THE CAR.
Squatting solidly in the doorway,
shielded by a suitcase,
is a coloured child.
Eyes amused ... and knowing
Popping veins pass, the tired legs,
and heavy black boots.
... Yet she sits, weary and fortunate,
WHEN STANDING NEAR DOORWAYS
KEEP A FIRM HOLD.
