page-108 THE GIRL AND HER DUCKS

Fancy having a duck as a pet
They laughed, she laughed
As the ducks waddled, she'd run
Through leafy foilage and flickering sun
They said it was strange, she said it was fun
They said she was queer, they said she was thick
She ignored, and pleasure roared
Until one day the little duck became sick

The girl knelt down low and
A tear left her eye
They said she was sloppy
And stupid to cry
She whispered in vain
'Please ducky, don't die!'
But the animal was in pain
An hour past, death arrived at last
Turning her rainbow to rain

The little duck died from a rupture
They laughed, she laughed
But really she cried
As something inside
Crackled and dried
Like an autumn leaf
That strangled her heart
Of her pet that had died
And those friends who did laugh.
