CORAL HULL: POINT-BLANK-POOR
14. The Fear Of Leaving Poverty

My family accused me of having unusually expensive tastes
when I changed my brand of tea from Bushells to Twinnings
& started eating mangoes, on a daily basis.
They expressed their intolerance of classical
music, particularly Beethoven's 5th.
When my brother got a decent job, new friends & a good car,
they put pressure on him in my grandmother's kitchen.
They said, 'You won't talk to us anymore,
you'll think you're too good for us.'
They want you to succeed & then they don't.
I moved 1000 kilometres away, so I could drink tea in peace.
My brother doesn't visit often.
