CORAL HULL: POINT-BLANK-POOR
19. The Marriage Of Poetry & Poverty

Anyone can write poetry because all you need
is a writing surface & a pen.
Say, a cheap pad, napkin, even toilet paper
or your arm. No instrument, art materials,
camera or video equipment.
You don't even have to know how to spell
or how to construct a sentence.
There's no need for plot, just music
& the poorer class have music, they have
always had it. Plucked from the empty air.
No instrument, no art materials,
You know who you are & they'll know who
you are, as soon as you open your mouth.
Anyone can write poetry, because all you need
is a life & a heart, just don't pretend
to be from a culture you're not.
In some ways, poetry is the pauper's art
& I must write it & write it.
