CORAL HULL: WILLIAM'S MONGRELS
HOSPITAL CREEK

'the black fellas tell ya it was thirteen hundred & the
white blokes say it was three hundred'(in reference to
a massacre occuring at Hospital Creek, Brewarrina,
N.S.W.)

six to a car on the road
out of bre/ we cross the
ghost grey bridge & turn
our vehicles around/ we
switch off our headlights
& drive back over the
wooden slats of hospital
creek/ this will allow
the min min lights to
follow us back into town/
it's local legend along
the goodooga road & a
supernatural thrill if
you can't hold your grog/
my cheekbone on the cold
glass window/ someone
drunk leaning on my
shoulder/ i look for
lights stone cold sober/
i find no spirits, no low
glowing plasma/ instead
still dead dark/ of over
grazed land/ on the outskirts
of ruined brewarrina/ it
is late, the town is quiet/
but we keep driving long
after the pub has shut/ a lot
of cars looking for each
other's tail lights/ someone
lights up a smoke as the
alcoholic high wears off/
1.30 a.m./ one car gets bogged
in soft sand/ we change a
tyre, we get tired/ no trophy
to bring back/ no hungover
tales of paranormal/ no healing
chants of dreaming/ we have
wasted fuel, found nothing
