CORAL HULL: WILLIAM'S MONGRELS
REASON FOR MY PARENTS' DIVORCE

nothing hurts as much as the
FOR AUCTION sign staked into
a place of the heart/ the new
comers, the enemy buyers,
trampling on your memories
wiping you out/ any marriage
broken, any house split down
the middle is lost, its halves
separate/ whichever side you
choose to tread upon, water
rushes in between & you are
marooned/ stranded upon what
you most depended on for
stability/ my mother always
wanted to dance & now she is
dancing/ dressed up creamy
pink lipstick which does not
run into the cracks/ parents
without partners & weeknight
dinners at the club/ gliding
into shopping plazas/ new
men leading her onto the
ballroom dancefloor glitz
of disco & formal raging/
my father's still thoughts
slide into inland water &
float downstream with bitten
fingernails & free floating
bait of uncaught fish/ dad's
torn green shirt & dirty
singlet in noon shadow & his
blue cattle dog: patch-em-up/
his red transistor, roll ya
own & homemade brew/ i sit
beside him/ willing river life
onto a safer place of swimming/
i'm thinking of my brothers
living in sydney/ we are left
viewing two distinct landscapes/
while navigating the currents
