ON THE BRUCE HWY (HEADING NORTH, QLD)
the first 4 hours on the road
are alright/ then, the one
big aloneness strikes/ & the
brutal queensland inland is
pushing me at the galaxy/
i felt my heart break like
drought break/ & the desert
dark raindrops falling in/
then, it got dark/ the bullet
black pitch & insect splatter
on my windscreen/ they say: it's
tropical, seasonal, dangerous/
i wouldn't do it with two dogs
(not with the crocodiles)/ i
wouldn't do it in an old e.h.
holden/ i wouldn't do it with
no money (out in the middle of
nowhere)/ & i wouldn't do it
as a woman/ but i'm taking up
these fistfuls of outback/
& eyefulls of cloudscape/ &
i'm heading north (the most
terrified person this side
of brisbane)/ one hour past
noosa on the highway through
gympie/ 5.45 p.m. the gravity
of panic dragging me further |
