(III) The Gift

"You cannot give me this [the Evenstar jewel]." - Aragorn Elessar (Walsh & Boyens)

Arwen, you cannot give this -

I fear you will fade from this dying world,
without a guide or star to call your own,
that you will die upon a moss green mound
when the Elanor and Niphredil are in bloom,
in a land where spring has not yet come.

My hand will not reach out to touch you,
to wipe the tears from your velvet cheek.
Your violet eyes will weep in twilight.
They will vanish from this place, forgotten,
and in grief too deep for time to mend.

We will be parted upon my death in Gondor.
Your kin will be long gone from your reach.
Arwen, your time here will be all too brief,
then this world of sorrow will lose your light
I fear you will go, to where I cannot follow.

I am mortal, doomed to time, you are elf-kind.
Arwen, your light will end, just like our story
and all will pass into the night, beyond a hope,
if you chose to stay here with me, you will fade
beyond a dream and you will diminish, unseen.

Arwen, you cannot give this -

"It is mine to give to whom I will, like my heart." - Arwen Evenstar (J.R.R. Tolkien)
