[I] Saruman to Gandalf

(on the fight between Gandalf and Saruman)

"We must join with Him, Gandalf. We must join with Sauron. It would be wise, my friend. Concealed within his fortress, the lord of Mordor sees all. His gaze pierces cloud, shadow, earth, and flesh. You know of what I speak." - Saruman the White (Walsh & Boyens)

Ah, Gandalf!
At last you arrive at my tower
and the new kingdom I have created for us.
You have come to worship me once again
to be humble.

You feed my ego with your presence.
Your trusting nature feeds my power
and I grow stronger now.

It has been a long time.
You are a little bedraggled
and sulky grey around the edges.

And not only that,
it appears the birds have told you secrets
for I sense something else is on your mind.
What is it, my old friend?
I will know what to do.

I will gladly teach you as I always have.
I offer you my wisdom.
See how I sing to your heart like the nightingale.
I give it to you as always,
You know that, don't you?

*

What you resist! And so early into the speech.
My old friend, your misplaced loyalty slows your mind
and too much pipeweed from Hippyton
has dulled your intuition.

I've caught up with your thinking before it began,
for I am slick with success,
neat and great and powerful.
There are many more like you who worship me now.
But you know about that too.

There is no heaven. There is no hell.
Only that which we create.
We are responsible! Is that so unreasonable?
Do you not imagine me as the perfect caretaker?

I perceive and create flesh from mud.
You know of what I speak.
For I am god. And so are you.
One by one they all fall into line now.
I have followers ready to worship me
And you can have this too!
We can make it work for us -- bend it to our will!
Our precious Middle Earth! I love it so.

Besides who said darkness was wrong -
and what harm does a little power do?

Who said anything was right or wrong to begin with?
You have been very misguided, my foolish friend.
We can go together to worship the dark lord
or you can perish. All heroes are fools.
They are the first to end their lives for nil.

What can you possibly hope to gain,
from where you stand?
Don't you know that no-one cares?

When will you learn that no-one watches over you?
I know your heart already for I have been there too.
I am no fool! Not ever --- not now.

Gandalf, listen to me, you can have it too.
We can go together to the workshop.
The world is in our hands.
Think of what it would be like - for both of us.

I have seen the beauty of it.
Now I share this with you.
Why should we fear it? My foolish pupil.

*

I now possess one of the lost seeing stones.
The nine dark riders have left Minus Morgul
at my instruction. They are ring wraiths.
They will hunt and seek your hobbit out.
They hour is darker than you could ever imagine.
The world has awoken to a new Master.
The ring wraiths will ride until they bleed the horses.
They will kill Frodo Baggins.
They will find the ring.
They will bring it home to me.

You must gaze only upon this truth,
or you will have no victory.
We must join with him, my friend.
It would be wisest.
Because he is within your dreams as well.
We must join with shadows, Gandalf.
Come into my heart and worship at my feet.
Come into the Tower of Isenguard!
It sings to you like nightingales!
What you resist!? Not so soon ...

Old fool! I have an eye that never sleeps,
an eye that seeeesss yyoooouuuuu!!!
Not so soon will you retreat from my consideration.
You leave to early. You old hippie.
I never said you were going anywhere.
Actually, I never said you would leave at all.
NOW SIT STILL. OLD FOOL.

*

My old friend - let us be rational
and reasonable about the situation.
You know of whom I speak -
there is a certain young hobbit
who carries a ring of power around his neck,
so very close to his heart it rests.
You must bring him back to me.

Ahhh Gandalf, your addiction to the halfling's weed
has clearly penetrated your sensibilities.
Generously I gave you a way of gain.
But so clearly and stupidly you have chosen pain.

All doors now shut on your life and purpose.
Your time now ends here at my command!
No more action is necessary.
Nor is is possible for you to leave.
When will you learn?
For how long will you fight me?
You resist - that is comedy.

*

I SEE you so clearly, against the wall!
We bend and jab and twist
and slide in robes and beards we fight!
With a pain in your heart
as if you would resist the pull of dark.
We spin like a galaxy,
but I see you hold your mind so still.

Saruman sees it too -- he sees all of you.
And I have you in my dungeon, Gandalf.

His gaze pierces stone and cloud,
his malice enters your flesh.

His absolute power is building you up,
into that which you were meant to be.

This world will worship at our feet.
We can have this final say.
You know of what I speak, a giant eye,
lidless beneath the flame.
He the wisest god aside from us!

For while you desire me you are weak,
so do you love me now?
You dumb do-gooder.
The wind from nowhere takes your cloak.
The church plate glass smashes.
Your wand is released.
You are slammed into your fate.
Why will you not come easily?

You are such a dummy.
There is only one way out.

You leave me no option but to send you skywards
Thus I hurl you onto the pinnacle of Orthnac
where I trust you will come to your senses at last.

Your whole life's purpose has become a mess!
So go and contemplate faith in your desolation!
