CORAL HULL: FAERY WOOD
34. essay on shyness, the deer-hearted lover

the big sun went down behind the hills, i followed him shyly into the campsite, he lit the young wood in my pupils, & i drank from the pond of his open mouth, but i was wrong, he fired a gun, there was a flash of red through lignum, as i took off into the wilds, all night i ran in his mind like a whisper, until the birds sprang up with dawn, & i stopped, misty & thick with fear, to stand alone, spotted & deserted in a clearing, i found myself in still water, & looked into the eyes of a fawn, trembling in the early light, surrounded by blackberries & lantana, i am quiet, deer-hearted, he left his gun behind & called out to my wounds, he came to several pools of blood, with prints of my knees beside them, where i had gone down, to hang my head & bleed in the bright sun
