CORAL HULL: IN THE DOG BOX OF SUMMER
EVENING FEELING

black trees of flutter-tipped leaves
twig snapping to a dark sherry sky
brisk & winter touched
i drift over night shaking grasses
cold-eyed at the distant light
town of a raw throated season i
the mindless shuttle of energy
now tremble with quietness
& living lightness

moonrise over a grass swept valley
ice-tip of a hungry bird's wing
she will sky flick madly then
nestle into moonlight

wind-ringing voices of people once known
closeness to something disturbing
shut the windows
doors
keep the candles burning
this is a place where winter walks
wild & unabated
the smooth feeling of darkness
is sometimes
a terrible
thing
