CORAL HULL: HOW DO DETECTIVES MAKE LOVE?
THE RICH ARE NOT HAPPY

my nan said: the rich are not happy/
money doesn't buy happiness/ money
can't buy health & money can't buy
love/ & i said: but i knew someone
with money that was happy/ they went
to good hospitals & had great lovers/
besides i would rather be rich &
unhappy than poor & unhappy/ but the
rich are not happy/ for example: all
that smiling & socialising & sailing
around sydney harbour/ there's some
very unhappy people underneath all
that/ you feel better within yourself
when you work a forty-hour week in a
factory for it/ too much of the good
life's not a good thing/ my nan said:
but the poor have good hearts/ & i
said: no they haven't/ they just
pretend they do to make up for the
fact that they haven't got any money/
like that fat woman who had to be
jolly/ the rich are not happy/ you
know you've done things the hard way/
the hard way's the best way/ you've
suffered for everything you've got/
& your mother had it hard & her
mother before her & her mother's
mother/ & if you have children no
doubt they will have it just as hard/
no doubt they will suffer/ you're a
real aussie battler/ but you'll make
it in the end/ & remember that when
you start at the top there's only one
way to go & that's down/ they're good
decent people where we come from/ &
remember life wasn't meant to be easy
& the rich are not happy
