CORAL HULL: HOW DO DETECTIVES MAKE LOVE?
AFFINITY

i had an affinity with him/ left my precious
bag of tricks on the floor/ along with my
purse & poetry folder/ & i walked towards
him/ often when i walk towards one/ with
whom i have an affinity/ i wear concrete
boots/ this time i was unfocused/ slightly
apart from my body/ i became courageous/
followed my footsteps towards him/ & looked
down upon my black shoes/ but did not feel
my feet touch the floor/ i had to grab the
moment/ before it completely passed me by/
taking the shape of something else/ i was
just in time in grabbing the moment/ i did
not block the doorway nor hold him by the
shirt/ & cannot say what it was that made
me grab the moment/ i can only say that it
was great/ i was once told by a married
woman/ that i had the look of singleness/
she came to me in a dream/ with her husband
behind her/ his hand on her shoulder/ & she
said: you have the look of singleness/ you
seem so free & so clear/ & i said: madam you
are right/ yet often i am so clear & bright
that affinity passes through me/ & now i am
facing him across the table/ & thinking i
could love you/ as i could love a million of
you/ & then you will pass through me & each
& every one of you will pass through me/ &
each moment of affinity is like a passing
light/ that my fingers fall through in a dark
landscape/ later in my dreams i climbed the
stairway to my past/ i sat like an aristocrat
on a high verandah in the dark/ & viewed the
city lights from a great distance/ & i was
myself a light that viewed the lights/ yet i
caught that courage like a snowflake on my
palm/ & for a moment i sat across the table
from him/ naked, vacated for the winter
