Day Two

VIII. SONGS OF SURVIVAL & EXTINCTION

1. Red Hill Roos

Crows, kites, hawks,
Blowflies
& every variety of fly.
Landfill
Bones jutting up out of the ground.
Hundreds
Of rotting kangaroo limbs
Sharp like sticks.
Burn it - it stinks - bury it.
Mixed plastic, white, blue & off red.
The stench from out of town
Or into town on windy days
Or into the ground with the rain.
Oh send it down.
In the heat it just floats.
Rises up with the clouds.
Red Hill roos
Flattened into landfills.
Dad calls it 'Hilter's little den'.
Reverse psychology:
Kill everything that stands upright.
Make it horizontal.
Make it disappear
like a horizon.

White faced cattle
Ready to cut down.
Like the trees
Long gone.
The survivors in life
& in poetry
Are the reptiles & birds.
The ones low to the ground.
On the outskirts of an ecosystem.
Or the ones in mid air
In homestead paintings.
Those birds that just hang there
Without the need of trees.
Nothing inbetween.
How do they survive?
It's all gone.
We walk alone.

Already, I feel the fate of cows
Like the landfill roos
Out on Red Hill.
The sinking feeling
In the day warm blood of them.
The spirit inside the Red Hill cows
As light as the morning.

I feel the market & the industry
Like the meat-eater's hands,
Already clawing at the hides,
As the life runs through them.
They are so full of warm blood.
So full of wind.
I smile as our car passes &
They run - I whisper - "Run,
For your life."
