3. A Dead Fox On The Grid Sign

We passed a dead fox hanging on the grid sign
Surrounded by all its nothing.
Trophy of no-one. Icon of nothing.
On the way home, the pale winter sun sinking.
Lighting its flat hide up.
It shone a creepy scarlet & the sign shone yellow.
When we drove past, it was brilliant & luminous
& the trickle of fox blood deep red
Frozen to the whiskers.

Like the early desert stars, frozen in patch's irises, on the back of the ute.
Crooked poles stuck up at intervals, holding up the telephone cable wire,
With news of bullet holes, through the causeway signs, by the saltbush,
Or a few bent sandalwood trees, standing around, out there on their own.

Time to get home
Before the car breaks down.
Before the sun sets its yellow ball, down along the flat line.

The sunset lights everything up,
Switching it from pale to golden.

It's as if flowers might spring up at this point.
Triumphant in the dust.
Paper dry daises that bloom for an instant
Just on dark.

It's the brightest it's been since midday.

The black calf turns suddenly.
In that instant
The big red sun, blinked out over her shoulder
As she turned.
You had to be quick to catch it
& all we saw
Was the muscular twitch of her back end
Bucking off through the winter saltbush.
Her short tail flicking
Like a switch
In the dusk
That puts out the day lights.

As she passed
She kicked up the dust into night behind her.

Finally,
The sun on dad's face
Through the glass on the windscreen.
His swollen orange cheeks, face like a giant mandarin.
Patch-'Em-Up tired in the back, big day, home for some soy milk.
"Geez it's cold, that wind, it's gettin' cold."
There's a few big stars around already.
