RABBIT SCREAM (II)

1. Death Of The Myxo Rabbit

Transferred into the bloodstream by a mosquito or flea, the virus begins to multiply,
In the inner & outer layers of skin, a bump like a tumour rises with the sun,
On the second day it has spread into the lymph glands,
Leaving one bright eyed, dry nosed rabbit,
Too sick to eat the land up, in the day as long as a year,
The will to live as thin as whiskers hanging on a slack jaw,
By the fourth day the ears hang pendulously,
The rabbit listens to echoes, dropping far away,
On day five, the eyes begin to swell, the anus & genitals,
A few steps down the track, a few hours later, he is five feet from where he began,
No closer to the warren, or the upturned tractor by the dam,
Frost collects on his tail, in the night as long as fence wire,
Over the next three days, infection becomes widespread,
The sun explodes into fiery skies, as the scrotum is ruptured,
Pus pours from his mouth, nose, eyes & throat, he is breathing flies & bubbles,
Ready to be crushed by a farmers boot, or just left dripping in the morning wind,
A last thought, is of hanging on by a whisker or a strand of grass.
